Rigor, credibility, transparency, trust.

The BEACON methodology is the public-facing explanation of why our instruments can be trusted. It covers the BEACON Trust Framework™, our standards for reliability and validity, our benchmarking approach, the assessment development process, and the research foundations our work is built on.

Trust Framework™

Six axes of credibility: behavioral relevance, empirical rigor, actionability, consistency, outcome linkage, normative benchmarking.

Reliability & Validity

Internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, longitudinal stability — plus construct, content, and criterion validity.

Development Process

How items are written, tested, refined, and benchmarked. How scores are computed and how confidence is reported.

Frequently asked

Questions boards ask about BEACON.

Is the BEACON assessment psychometrically validated?

The BEACON Trust Framework™ is designed to support rigorous assessment development and ongoing validation. Items are grounded in governance and organizational research, refined through subject-matter expert review, and continually evaluated for internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and longitudinal stability. Validation is treated as a living program, not a one-time certification.

How are benchmarks established?

Normative benchmarks are constructed from the BEACON respondent population and triangulated against recognized governance sources — NACD principles, Spencer Stuart Board Index, the PwC Annual Corporate Directors Survey, Deloitte Governance Outlook, and sector-specific governance standards. Boards are compared within ownership structure, sector, and maturity bands so peer context is meaningful, not generic.

Can nonprofit and corporate boards use the same framework?

Yes. The methodology is intentionally portable across corporate, nonprofit, healthcare, education, association, and public-sector governance. The Governance Intelligence™ constructs — stewardship, foresight, sensemaking — are universal board capabilities; sector-specific benchmarks and language are applied at the reporting layer.

How often should boards reassess?

Most boards benefit from an annual Governance Intelligence™ pulse, with a periodic deep-dive review every two to three years. Boards in transition — new CEO, M&A, strategy reset, or major regulatory change — should reassess sooner to capture the shift in governance posture.

How is confidentiality protected?

Individual director responses are confidential. Reports surface aggregated and pattern-level findings only, with minimum response thresholds before any sub-group view is rendered. Raw response data is access-controlled, encrypted in transit and at rest, and never shared with management, sponsors, or third parties without explicit board authorization.
